Author known for his historical fiction, such as the novels The Book of Daniel (1960), which was nominated for the National Book Award, and Ragtime (1975), which became a Broadway musical in 1998. Doctorow served as editor in chief at Dial Press, where he worked until 1969 with such writers as Norman Mailer and James Baldwin.
