Air-breathing in fishes
The water level in the Okawango delta varies considerably with season. During the dry season when water levels are low, flow is reduced and many areas become hypoxic, that is the water contains little dissolved oxygen. Aquatic animals can respond to this averse condition by seasonal migration, estivation, and/or initiate aquatic surface respiration (ASR), i.e. swimming near the surface where the oxygen exchange is the largest. However, another way would be to utilise the much higher oxygen content of air – and so we find a number of fish species that do breathe air. [eng] |
