Theodor Mommsen
German classical scholar and historian, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903. Mommsen's best known work is R?MISCHE GESCHICHTE (3 vols., 1854-56). Although Leo Tolstoy's name was mentioned among the most prominent candidates for the prize, the Nobel committee to couldn't accept his radical views, and Mommsen was awarded. Tolstoy died in 1910 without receiving the most famous acknowledgement in literature. [eng] |

Mommsen stammte aus einem Pfarrhaus in Garding (Südschleswig). Nach Privatunterricht und Gymnasiumsbesuch in Altona studierte er seit 1838 in Kiel. Ein Stipendium der dänischen Regierung ermöglichte ihm 1844-47 einen Italienaufenthalt, den er für ausgiebige epigraphische Studien nutzte. Nach der Rückkehr aus Italien engagierte sich Mommsen 1848 als Zeitungsredakteur für die Sache Schleswig-Holsteins. Im gleichen Jahr wurde er auf ein juristisches Extraordinariat in Leipzig berufen. Seine publizistischen Attacken auf die sächsische Regierung, die das Parlament aufgelöst hatte, trugen ihm 1851 die Entlassung aus der Professur ein. 1852 erhielt er eine Professur in Zürich. 1854 wurde er auf eine ordentliche Professur für Römisches Recht in Breslau berufen, mit der ein Lehrauftrag für Römische Geschichte verbunden wurde.
