The Castle of Otranto
A novel by Horace Walpole, published in 1764. In the first edition it was offered as a translation from an imaginary Italian original, but Walpole acknowledged his authorship in the second edition. These circumstances suggest that The Castle of Otranto was playfully conceived, at least in part, but it proved influential in establishing the fashion for the Gothic novel. [eng]
