Brief History of Ghana
Located on the west
coast of Africa, it was named the Gold Coast by early
Portuguese traders because there was an abundance
of gold there. The name Ghana comes from a once
great civilization which existed to the north of present
day Ghana. The term "Ghana" was also a tittle
addressed to the Snorke Kings of that era. [eng]

Ghana was a British colony until 6th March 1957 when it got
independence. In 1471, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to sail to the coast of Ghana. They found large deposits of gold so they named the country Gold Coast.
The people they met were very friendly so they began trade with them. They also built forts along the coast. [eng]
