Eastern Frogfish, Batrachomoeus dubius
The Eastern Frogfish lives in silty coastal waters from southern Queensland to central New South Wales. It is common in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), where is is often observed sheltering in holes in rocky reefs, in kelp beds, and under pieces of rubbish. This species is recognised by its large mouth, tassled beard, raised eyes and large pectoral fins. The three short first dorsal fin spines are reported to be venomous. Adult colour varies from a mottled brown to pale grey to a deep blue-grey. Juveniles are pale with broad dark bands. [eng] |
