Lagostomus maximus (Plains Viscacha): Narrative
Lagostomus maximus inhabits grasslands and lowland desert scrubs. The animal also constructs burrow systems in the barren parts of pampas at an elevation of 2,680 meters. [eng]
Plains Viscacha
The single living species, L. maximus, occurs in extreme southern Paraguay and in northern and central Argentina (Cabrera 1961). Another species, L. crassus, is known only by a single skull found in southern Peru. Since the specimen was not fossilized, it may have represented an animal that lived in Recent times, but any associated population evidently disappeared long ago. [eng]
Plains viscacha
This viscacha lives in groups which can number up to 50 individuals. Underground burrows, which have various entrances and chambers, house the entire colony. The viscacha emerges from its burrow at night to forage for food, which includes grass, roots, and other plant matter. [eng]
