Bathyergidae Family
This family contains 12 species in 5 genera. Its members are found in Africa south of the Sahara. These rodents are small to medium in size, ranging from around 80 gms to perhaps 600 gms in body weight. [eng]
Bathyergidae: African Mole-rats, or Blesmols
The usual habitat of African mole-rats is an area of loose, sandy soil. All species feed primarily on subterranean bulbs and roots found by tunneling 10-300 mm below the surface. The depth of the tunnel is apparently directly related to the looseness of the soil. The burrow systems include large chambers for sleeping and storing food. [eng]
