St Albert was one of the earliest generation of the Dominican order, founded in 1216; he took a large part in the momentous intellectual developments of the thirteenth century, and was declared patron of all those who devote themselves to the natural sciences, by Pope Pius XII in 1941. He is traditionally known as Albertus Magnus, Albert the Great. Later he was canonized as Saint Albert the Great. He was both student and teacher of alchemy and chemistry, and an alleged magician.
