    ARAB EXPLORATION
The Arab world consists of many ethnic groups and regions. Turks, Palestinians, Egyptians, Iranians, Saudi Arabians, and select groups from Africa and India are included in this group of land and sea traders. In ancient times these diverse groups were sometimes united under one ruler, but this did not mean they cooperated with each other. It was not until they were unified under Islam in the seventh century A.D. that these people shared a common, long-term goal. [eng]

His early travels as secretary to Earl Macartney (who was ambassador to China and governor of the Cape of Good Hope colony) were recorded in Travels in China (1804) and Travels into . . . POLYNESIA
Historians believe that Pacific Islanders explored the entire South Pacific region well before the era of recorded history. Around 2500 B.C., historians speculate, Southeast Asians began to migrate throughout the Pacific. By the eighth century A.D., the Polynesians had crossed 15 million miles of unknown ocean and colonized every habitable island in a huge triangle bound by Hawaii on the north, New Zealand in the southwest, and Easter Island to the east. Sturdy outrigger canoes could have been used to bring large numbers of people and trading items across rough seas from island to island. [eng]
    CHINA
By the first century A.D., historians say, the Chinese had some knowledge of the winds and currents of the Pacific. When weather prevented the Chinese from navigating by the sky they mariners used magnetized needles to guide them. Because the sailors had no level surface on their rocking ship, they floated the needle in a shallow bowl of water, and the compass that guides explorers to this day was born. [eng]
