d. 1500, Portuguese navigator. He was the first European to round (1488) the Cape of Good Hope, which he called Cabo Tormentoso [cape of storms]. That voyage opened the road to India. Dias accompanied Cabral on the voyage that resulted in the discovery of Brazil, but he perished in heavy seas off the African coast. He is also called Bartholomew Diaz.

A friend of Vasco da Gama, in 1500 he was sent out by Manuel I as head of a fleet destined for India. Bartolomeu Dias was one of his officers. Cabral went far west of his course and reached the coast of Brazil, which he claimed for Portugal. [eng]

A partir de 1530/1532 o Portugal comeзou de colonizar mais intenso o pais. O primeiro nome do pais era Terra da Santa Cruz, mas depois 1540 o nome mudou para Brasil (madeira Brasil - pernambuco).
