The WWW Virtual Library: Model Organisms
Many aspects of biology are similar in most or all organisms, but it is frequently much easier to study particular aspects in particular organisms - for instance, genetics is easier in small
organisms that breed quickly, and very difficult in humans! The most popular model organisms have strong advantages for experimental research, and become even more useful when
other scientists have already worked on them, discovering techniques, genes and other useful information.

WormBase
Repository of mapping, sequencing and phenotypic information about the C. elegans
nematode. This prototype of the final database is layered on top of ACeDB, and has not been subjected to the
rigorous curation expected of the ultimate product. The data available here correspond to the January 2001
release and contain the "essentially complete" genomic sequence. [eng]

Phylum Nematoda
Roundworms (nematodes) are bilaterally symmetrical, worm-like organisms that are surrounded by a strong, flexible noncellular layer called a cuticle. Their body plan is simple. The
cuticle is secreted by and covers a layer of epidermal cells. Near the body wall but under the epidermal cells are muscle cells; they run in the longitudinal direction only. A true coelom is
lacking, instead, nematodes have a "pseudocoel" formed directly from the cavity of the blastula (rather than as a result of the division or folding of mesoderm). The cavity of the
pseudocoel is small, being mostly filled with an intestine and oviducts or testes. A simple nervous system consists of a ring of nervous tissue around the pharynx that gives rise to dorsal
and ventral nerve cords running the length of the body.

Zoology projects - Loch Ness worms
One objective of this project is to identify the worms and study the
ecological patterns of this unpolluted European lake so that these patterns
can be used to assess the varying degrees of pollution in other lakes. [eng]
