Grassland Animal Printouts
A grassland is a grassy, windy, partly-dry biome, a sea of grass. Almost one-fourth of the Earth's land area is grassland. In many areas, grasslands separate forests from deserts. Deep-rooted grasses dominate the flora in a grassland; there are very few trees and shrubs in a grassland, less than one tree per acre. There are many different words for grassland environments around the world, including savannas, pampas, campos, plains, steppes, prairies and veldts. [eng]

Grasslands
Grasslands are characterized as lands dominated by grasses rather than large shrubs or tress. In the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, which covered a period of about 25 million years, mountains rose in western North America and created a continental climate favorable to grasslands. Ancient forests declined and grasslands became widespread. Grasslands expanded in range following the retreat of glaciers, as hotter and drier climates prevailed worldwide after the last ice age. There are two main divisions of grasslands: (1) tropical grasslands, called savannas, and (2) temperate grasslands. [eng]
