W latach 1912-1914 profesor uniwersytetu w Dijon, od 1920 w Strasburgu, od 1933 kierownik katedry historii kultury nowożytnej w Collège de France. Współtwórca tzw. szkoły syntezy historycznej, głoszącej teorię historii integralnej, obejmującej wszystkie dziedziny życia, dostrzegając przy tym zmienność form na przestrzeni dziejów.
