    Alfred Lothar Wegener: Moving continents
"Perhaps Alfred Wegener's greatest contribution to the scientific world was his ability to weave seemingly dissimilar, unrelated facts into a theory, which was remarkably visionary for the time. Wegener was one of the first to realize that an understanding of how the Earth works required input and knowledge from all the earth sciences." [eng]
    Alfred Wegener
At the turn of the 20th century, the prevailing view of the earth was that it was slowly cooling and contracting, and -- like the skin of a rotting fruit -- its surface was wrinkling to produce mountains and valleys. Noting the similarity between the west coast of Africa and the east coast of South America, Alfred Wegener disagreed, and concluded that earth's continents had at one time been joined in a single landmass, which he named Pangaea. He further claimed that as continents moved around and smashed into each other, they formed mountains. It was an audacious idea, and geologists bristled with hostility. [eng]

Alfred Wegener perrished in a snow storm together with a man from Ukkusissat, on a trip from a camp up on the central ice cap, 1932. They met their faith 20 km from the Black Angel. Arctic is a harsh mistress." [eng]
