Baer, Karl von (1792-1876)
German-Russian embryologist who discovered the mammalian egg in 1826. Baer examined and reported the development of a wide range of organisms, mostly vertebrates. Baer's work supported the theory of epigenesis proposed by Wolff. Baer rejected mechanistic interpretation of development, believing in an "essence" which controls the development of the germ. He also rejected the recapitulation doctrine. [eng]
