CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Felix de Lope de Vega Carpio
With Lope de Vega begins the era of dramatic glory in Spanish literature of the Golden Age. He seems to have been an extraordinarily precocious child, whence the term "monstruo de la naturaleza", "freak of nature", which clung to him throughout his life. [eng]

VEGA CARPIO, LOPE FELIX DE
His epics, his pastorals, his odes, Ms sonnets, now forgotten, all placed him in the front rank of authorship. Such was his prestige that he dealt with: his noble patrons almost on a footing of equality. The duke of Sessa in particular, his Maecenas from 1605 onwards, was also his personal friend, and the tone of Lope's letters to him is one of frank familiarity, modified only by some forms of deference.
