Roald Amundsen (July 16, 1872-June 22, 1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible (May 11-13, 1926) and was the first person to reach the South Pole. He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles.

Первым прошел Северо-Западным проходом па судне «Йоа» от Гренландии к Аляске (1903- 1906). Руководил экспедицией в Антарктику на судне «Фрам» (1910-1912).Первым достиг Южного полюса (14 декабря 1911). В 1918-1920 годах прошел вдоль северных берегов Евразии на судне «Мод». В 1926 году руководил первым перелетом через Северный полюс на дирижабле «Норвегия». Погиб в Баренцевом море во время поисков итальянской экспедиции У. Нобиле.
