CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Raphael the Archangel
The name of this archangel (Raphael = "God has healed") does not appear in the Hebrew Scriptures, and in the Septuagint only in the Book of Tobias. Here he first appears disguised in human form as the travelling companion of the younger Tobias, calling himself "Azarias the son of the great Ananias". [eng]
September 29 Saint
Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are called "saints" because they are holy. But they are different from the rest of the saints because they were not human. They are angels. They are protectors of human beings and we know something about each of them from the Bible. [eng]
St. Raphael
Raphael is the name given to one of the seven archangels who stand before the throne of God. He figures prominently in the book of Tobit, a dramatic tale in the Septuagint. [eng]
