Atlas of the Sioux Wars The title "Sioux" is at once a powerful and an ambiguous appellation. It is powerful because it evokes in the minds of most readers an accurate image of a proud and courageous American Indian tribe. It is ambiguous because to different disciplines it means different things. To the modern archaeologist and anthropologist, it encompasses all the tribes that eventually evolved their own dialect from an ancient common Siouan language. This incorporates tribes across the northern and midwestern United States and southern Canada. [eng]
