Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von 1775-1854, German philosopher. First influenced by the IDEALISM of J.G. FICHTE, he held the concept of the Absolute to represent the ultimate unity of mind and matter. Later Schelling saw history as a series of stages progressing toward that unity, and (unlike Fichte) held that nature itself progressed toward the Absolute. [eng]
