[fra]

Bryophytes (Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts)
These are the simplest of the land plants and are often conspicuous in moist, terrestrial habitats in Nova Scotia. The 1987 Checklist of Mosses in Canada lists over 550 taxa from the
province. Mosses (Musci) are scattered throughout most terrestrial and many littoral, aquatic habitats. Liverworts (Hepaticae) of both the leafy forms (Jungermanniales) and thalloid
(rosette-like) forms (Metzgeriales and Marchantiales) occur widely in moist, terrestrial, and semi-aquatic situations in Nova Scotia. Hornworts (Anthocerotae) are thalloid plants with
cylindrical (hornlike) sporangia (spore-bearing structure) arising from the thallus surface. [eng]

Mosses and liverworts, simple plants?
Mosses (Bryophyta) are quite interesting, simple green land plants with leaves and a stem and always without roots. In many mosses, the leaves are only one cell thick, except for the
midribs, which are sometimes present. So the leaves are easy objects for the microscope. The plant is normally attached to the ground by delicate, colourless or brown threads, the
rhizoids. [eng]

Natural Perspective: Mosses (Phylum Bryophyta) and Allies
Mosses and their allies are small green plants that are simlutaneously overlooked and deeply appreciated
by the typical nature lover. On the one hand, very few people pay attention to individual moss plants and
species. On the other hand, it is the mosses that imbues our forests with that wonderful lush "Rainforest"
quality which soothes the soul and softens the contours of the earth. [eng]

Mosses
There are approximately 14,500 species of mosses. They are world-wide in distribution and can be found at sea level as well as the highest altitudes occupied by plants. Although
they can occur in deserts or be submerged in water, most mosses occupy moist, shaded habitats. [eng]

Bryophytes - introduction
he Bryophytes are like the rest of land plants, Embryophytes (plants that produce an embryo) and they have traditionally been viewed as a distinct lineage from other
land plants. They are not considered to have given rise to the vascular plants but they probably were the earliest land plants (Qui & Palmer, 1999). Like the rest of the
land plants, they evolved from green algal ancestors, closely related to the Charophytes. They are a group of simple land plants, well-adapted to moist habitats. [eng]

Mosses and Liverworts in Wales
This site is intended to provide an introduction
to some of the wide range of mosses and
liverworts (or bryophytes) that occur in Wales.
It is mainly aimed at those interested in, but
with little or no knowledge of these simple but
often beautiful and fascinating plants, in the
hope of stimulating that interest further. [eng]
