Southwestern Willow Flycatchers in the Grand Canyon
The southwestern willow
flycatcher (Empidonax traillii
extimus) occurs, as its name
implies, throughout most of the
southwestern United States (Fig.
1). It is a Neotropical migrant
songbird, i.e., one of many birds
that return to the United States and
Canada to breed each spring after
migrating south to the Neotropics
(Mexico and Central America) to
winter in milder climates. [eng]

Hammond's Flycatcher
One of the typical summer mountain forest birds in the Pacific Northwest is the inconspicuous Hammond's
Flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii). Flycatchers in the genus Empidonax are all very similar, and
notoriously difficult to identify. [eng]

Introduction
The manakin is one of 9,000 species of birds. The manakin is a neotropical, subscine passerine bird that has a family of 40 different species within 10 genera. The majority of the
manakins practice a breeding style referred to as lek breeding, where males do elaborate displays to mate with females manakins, but do not contribute to the care for the offspring. [eng]
