Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón
Alarcon's journey is mostly associated with Coronado's expedition of 1540. He sailed up the Gulf of California and up to the shoals of the Colorado River. He had contact with the Yuman-speaking Indians along the Colorado. Most of the information he compiled consisted of the practices of the Native Americans, warfare, religion, curing, even sexual practices. [eng]
Alarcon, Hernando de
Spanish explorer in the Southwest. He was given command of a fleet that was supposed to support the land expedition of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado. In the summer of 1540 he sailed up the Gulf of California; proved definitely that Lower California was a peninsula, not an island; and discovered the Colorado River. [eng]
ALARCON, HERNANDO DE
Spanish scholar, was born at Medina del Campo in 1555. His friendship with Antonio Perez caused him to be arrested in 1590 and imprisoned for nearly thirteen years. His Tdcito espanol ilustrado con aforismos (Madrid, 1614) is the only work which bears his name, but he is probably the author of the Discurso del gobierno ascribed to Perez. [eng]
