Литературное творчество начал «морскими» романами – Кернок-пират (Kernock le pirate, 1831), Плик и Плок (Plick et Plock, 1831), затем обратился к романам светским – Артюр (Arthur, 1838), Маркиз де ла Леторьер (Marquis de la Ltorire, 1839) – и историческим – Латреомон (Latraumont, 1837). Под влиянием тогдашней волны интереса к социальным проблемам он создал два самых известных своих романа – Парижские тайны (Les Mystres de Paris, 1842–1843) и Вечный жид (Le Juif errant, 1844–1845).
