isopod - Britannica.com
A group of diverse, widely occurring
forms including marine, freshwater, and terrestrial species. Most are free-living, but a
number of marine species are parasitic on other animals. They are usually inconspicuous.
Most of the 4,000 species, which include the pill bug, the sow bug, and the gribble, are
from 0.7 to 35 mm (0.28 to 1.4 inches) long; however, Bathynomus giganteus, a marine
species of the Caribbean Sea, grows to 35 cm (14 inches). [eng]

The Woodlice (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea)
Woodlice are among the most familiar of animals. They have featured prominently throughout history in recipes (Holt, 1885, included a recipe for 'woodlouse sauce'), in the poetry of Sir
John Betjeman, the novels of Jean Paul Sartre, the paintings of Paul Klee (Chater, 1988) and have even provided the inspiration for a sermon (Thornton, 1989). In the past, woodlice were
often carried in a small pouch attached to a cord around the neck. [eng]

Isopod gallery
Such is the diversity of form of the isopods that no species can be regarded as typical. Some are flat, some are thin, some are free living and others are parasitic. Isopods are recognised by
having most of the seven pairs of legs very similar to each other and in having only one pair of 'uropods' or tail-limbs. Virtually all of the 95 world families are represented by numerous
species in Australia. [eng]

Isopoda
[deu]

Stygobiont crustaceans
Stygobiont Crustaceans; the phylogeny and biogeography of ground water and cave dwelling amphipods and
isopods. The research group of Systematic Zoology at the University of Amsterdam works at several projects, all leading to the assessment of biodiversity on a global scale. One of these projects
comprises the biogeography, evolutionary history and conservation of ground water crustaceans (small shrimp-like, blind animals) of marine origin. [eng]
