de Vries, Hugo (1848-1935)
Dutch botanist who devised a theory of inheritance of characteristics, then uncovered the work of Mendel when searching the literature. He went beyond Mendel, however, when he observed mutations in the American evening primrose. He also emphasized the importance of osmotic pressure to plant life, showing that plants whither when surrounded by an ionic solution if the it has a higher osmotic pressure. [eng]
