Coleonyx
While traipsing through garbage dumps may not sound appealing to most people, it is one of the best places to find banded geckos (Coleonyx sp.). Upon capture, many species in this genus let out an amazingly loud squeaking sound similar to the noises that emanate from a rusty door hinge. Some members of this genus are very common across the Southwest, while others are very rare and only known from a few specimens. The genus Coleonyx has species across the Southwestern United States in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California, Utah, and Nevada. [eng]

Aggregation in the banded gecko, Coleonyx variegatus.
Aggregation of Ceoleonyx variegatus in diurnal shelter sites is shown to be a statistically valid phenomenon, confirming earlier reports based on subjective impressions. Preliminary data on causative factors suggest that limited burrow availability promoted aggregation. Experiments in which two individuals were placed in cages having an excess of burrows revealed no indication of interindividual attraction. However, these results do not exclude the operation of social factors in aggregation. [eng]

Western Banded Gecko (Coleonyx variegatus)
These delicate little pastel-colored lizards seem too fragile to survive in the extreme heat and dryness of the southwestern U.S. deserts, but they get along just fine, thank you, primarily by coming out only at night. [eng]
