    Protestantism
    The religion of all non-Catholic Western Christians. Specifically, the principles taught by Martin Luther (1483-1546), a German monk and reformer who more or less instigated the Reformation. Luther's 95 Theses, posted on the door of a German cathedral sparked a mjor schism in the Catholic Church and established a wave of non-Catholic sects based on the principle that ordinary Christians were competent to profess their faith without adhering to the dicta of popes.     Calvinism
    The religious doctrines of John Calvin (1509-1564), a Swiss Protestant theologian who, in 1536, became professor of divinity and minister of the church in Geneva. He emphasized an omnipotent God, predestination, and the salvation of a chosen few (the "elect") by God's grace alone. [eng]
    Zwinglianism
    The doctrines of Huldreich Zwingli (1484-1531), a contemporary of Martin Luther and Swiss religious reformer of Christian sacramentalism. [eng]
    Huguenotism
    The doctrines, beliefs, or practices of the Huguenots, a sect of French Protestantism derived from an influential reformer of the 16th and 17th centuries. [eng]
    Unitarianism
    The doctrines of Unitarians, whose beliefs vary from pure deism to an acceptance of the Bible and the divinity of Christ with many intermediate beliefs touching various doctrines made fundamental by other churches. They emphasize the oneness of God, tolerance for all religious belief, and virtuous character. Unitarianism in the U.S. developed under Dr. William Channing (1780-1842) in the early 1800s. [eng]
    Puritanism
    PURITANISM The doctrines and practices of the Puritans, a Protestant sect founded in the 16th century that promoted simplified ritual and strict morality.
