This site presents taxonomic information, images, records of collections, and references pertaining to diatoms. [eng]
Diatom
This page contains information of general interest to diatomists and other phycologists along with links to other useful Internet resources. [eng]
Great Lakes Diatoms
Useful site for professional biologists and ecologist containing short discriptions of taxones, genera list and checklist of Great Lakes diatoms. [eng]
Systematics of the Bacillariophyta
Diatoms may be divided into two main classes. The centrate diatoms, or Centrobacillariophyceae, are generally radially symmetrical, like the specimen of Melosira shown above at left. Pinnularia, at right, is a pennate diatom, member of the Pennatibacillariophyceae, showing its typical bilateral symmetry. [eng]

Paleolimnology & Diatom
Web pages concentrating on the science of paleolimnology and the study of diatom algae. Hopefully, these pages will be useful to scientists and students in locating useful data, programs, information, etc. and connect to other useful Internet sites. [eng]
Life History and Ecology of Diatoms
Diatoms may be extremely abundant in both freshwater and marine ecosystems; it is estimated that 20% to 25% of all organic carbon fixation on the planet (transformation of carbon dioxide and water into sugars, using light energy) is carried out by diatoms. This is possible because they contain chlorophyll. Diatoms are thus a major food resource for marine and freshwater microorganisms and animal larvae, and are a major source of atmospheric oxygen. [eng]
Diatoms
Diatoms are beautiful single celled organisms. They make a glass house of silica consisting of two valves that fit into each other like a little pill box. The colour of the living tissue is yellow-brown instead of the green we know of other creatures that use light as a source for energy. [eng]
Freshwater Diatoms
The diatoms presented here were all collected in Central Texas with the exception of a few taken from Washington State in the vicinity of the Olympian Peninsula. All were mounted in naphrax. [eng]
Introduction to the Bacillariophyta
The Bacillariophyta are the diatoms. With their exquisitely beautiful silica shells, or frustules such as that of Odontella shown above at right, diatoms are among the loveliest microfossils. They are also among the most important aquatic microorganisms today: they are extremely abundant both in the plankton and in sediments in marine and freshwater ecosystems, and because they are photosynthetic they are an important food source for marine organisms. Some may even be found in soils or on moist mosses. [eng]

Cohn Lab Center For Diatom Research
This site is sponsored by the lab of Dr. Stanley Cohn and designed for anybody interested in or working with Diatoms. Among the pages presented here are basic introductions for those who would like more general information on Diatoms as a species as well as information about our lab and what we do. [eng]

Algae Divisions - BACILLARIOPHYTA
Bacillariophyta are unicellular organisms that are important components of phytoplankton as primary sources of food for zooplankton in both marine and freshwater habitats. Most diatoms are planktonic, but some are bottom dwellers or grow on other algae or plants. [eng]
