Norcott de Bisson Hornibrook
FROM A HUMBLE beginning in geology as a technician aged 18 with an oil company in Gisborne, Norcott Hornibrook rose to be a pre-eminent scientist who made major contributions to stratigraphic geology in New Zealand and abroad. His life is a remarkable example of focused research in which goals were identified early and pursued with great vigour and determination. The delights of discovery fascinated him, until his death, quite unexpectedly, on 18 April 1994. It was a life of great achievement. [eng]
Foraminifera - Classification
Foraminifera are classified primarily on the composition and morphology of the test. Three basic wall compositions are recognised, organic (protinaceous mucopolysaccharide i.e. the allogromina), agglutinated and secreted calcium carbonate (or more rarely silica). [eng]

Introduction to the Foraminifera
Foraminifera (forams for short) are single-celled protists with shells. Their shells are also referred to as tests because in some forms the protoplasm covers the exterior of the shell. The shells are commonly divided into chambers which are added during growth, though the simplest forms are open tubes or hollow spheres. Depending on the species, the shell may be made of organic compounds, sand grains and other particles cemented together, or crystalline calcite. [eng]

Stratigraphic distributions of some Neogene benthic foraminifera in New Zealand
The following links show distribution tables published in Hornibrook, N. deB.; Brazier, R.C.; Strong, C.P. 1989: Manual of New Zealand Permian to Pleistocene foraminiferal biostratigraphy. New Zealand Geological Survey paleontological bulletin 56. 175 p. Significant Cenozoic taxa arranged in order of appearance are shown in 6 tables. Generally, the authors have adjusted first and last occurrences to the nearest local stage boundary. [eng]

Foraminifera - Biology
Studies of living foraminifera, in controlled laboratory environments, have provided limited information regarding trophic strategies but much has been inferred by relating test morphology to habitat. Foraminifera utilise a huge variety of feeding mechanisms, as evidenced by the great variety of test morphologies that they exhibit. [eng]

Foraminifera
Foraminifera or foraminifers or forams (for short) generally very common in marine post-Palaeozoic rocks. They are quite easy to get out of soft rocks such as clays and marls, but can also be found in loose oolites, shell sands and chalks. [eng]
Local stages to be used for the Wanganui Series (Pliocene-Pleistocene), and their means of definition
Suggestions to abandon New Zealand local stages, or to redefine their boundaries solely at physically defined horizons, confuse the two very distinct aims of a stage classification. These are objectively to order New Zealand rocks on the basis of New Zealand biostratigraphic or other chronostratigraphic criteria, and to allow correlation of the New Zealand time-scale with the international one. Stratigraphy of the Waitakian - Otaian boundary, E. Miocene, N.Z.
Integrated stratigraphy of the Waitakian - Otaian Stage boundary stratotype, Early Miocene, New Zealand. The base of the type section of the Otaian Stage at Bluecliffs, South Canterbury, is recognised as the stratotype for the boundary between the Waitakian and Otaian Stages. Principal problems with the boundary are the restriction of existing bioevent proxies to shelf and upper slope environments and its uncertain age. [eng]

This site refers to some studies of Neogene - Recent foraminifera and biostratigraphy in the New Zealand region which may be useful to the research community. Included are abstracts of recent publications, bibliographies, summary stratigraphic distributions of significant taxa, and notices of some projects in progress. [eng]
