Poissons de taille moyenne, йpi- et mйsopйlagiques dans les eaux ocйaniques tempйrйes, occasionnellement sur le plateau continental, les jeunes forment des groupes assez lвches et s'associent souvent а des objets flottants ou а des mйduses (cas de Schedophilus). Ils se nourrissent de crustacйs, de salpes et de petits poissons. Des 4 espиces rencontrйes dans la zone, seule Centrolophus niger est relativement commune et pкchйe occasionnellement au moyen de sennes coulissantes, de chaluts de fond, de palangres dйrivantes ou de fond.
