Belontiidae
The Family Belontiidae contains these Genera: Belontia, Betta, Colisa, Ctenops, Macropodus, Malpulutta, Parasphaerichthys, Parosphromenus, Pseudosphromenus, Sphaerichthys, Trichogaster, Trichopsis. [eng]
Belontiidae - labyrinth fish
The Belontiidae are a group of fish which come from tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia and Africa. The main characteristic of this family is that they have an extra organ called a labyrinth, which allows them to obtain oxygen from the air, therefore they can live in shallow, muddy pools. Due to this the air space above the water should be kept at the same temperature as the water to prevent illness in the fish. [eng]
Nonindigenous fishes - Belontiidae
The Belontiidae is the largest and most diverse anabantoid family, comprising 12 genera with about 46 species (Nelson 1994). Witte and Schmidt (1992) recently recognized 32 species in the single genus Betta, the so-called fighting fishes. [eng]
