Hyaenidae
The family Hyaenidae contains four species, each in its own genus, found in Africa, SW Asia, and India. Three species, which include the animals we usually think of as hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta, Hyaena hyaena, and Parahyaena brunnea), hunt and scavenge large vertebrate prey. The fourth species, the aardwolf (Proteles cristata), subsists almost exclusively on termites.

Hyenas: Introduction @ 123spot
There are 4 species of hyena (scientific name hyaenidae), the spotted, striped and brown hyena. The fourth is the aardwolf, which is considered by some not to be a species of hyena at all. Many people believe that the hyena is from the canine family, which is untrue. Hyenas are in fact closely related to meerkats, mongoose, civets, fossas and cats! Hyaenidae are found in Africa, South Western Asia, and India. [eng]

Aardwolf and Hyenas
This family of three Recent genera and four species is found in Africa and southwestern and south-central Asia. The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Simpson (1945), who recognized two subfamilies: Protelinae, with the single genus Proteles (aardwolf); and Hyaeninae, with Crocuta and Hyaena.
