Durkheim - The Work - Sociology of Religion
"Durkheim's sociology of religion is not limited to these general considerations, which, in fact, are contained in only a few pages of his monumental work on The Elementary Forms of Religious Life. The bulk of the book is devoted to a close and careful analysis of primitive religion, more particularly of the data on primitive Australian forms of cults and beliefs." [eng]

Philosophers : Emile Durkheim
Sociologist, born in Epinal, France, generally regarded as one of the founders of sociology. He studied at Paris, and became a teacher, then taught at the University of Bordeaux (1887) and at the Sorbonne. His writings include Les Règles de la méthode sociologique (1894, The Rules of Sociological Method) and a definitive study of suicide (1897). He is perhaps best known for his concept of "collective representations', the social power of ideas stemming from their development through the interaction of many minds. [eng]

Emile Durkheim
Emile D. Durkheim was born on the evening of April 15, 1858 at Epinal in Lorraine. His mother, Melanie, was a merchant's daughter and his father was the Rabbi of Epinal and was also Chief Rabbi of the Vosges and Haute-Marne. Emile spent part of his early school years in a rabbinical school destined to follow the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great grandfather, who had also been rabbis. However, this desire was short-lived as he cut away from Judaism after he arrived in Paris. [eng]
The Emile Durkheim Archive
Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) is by far one of the most important and prolific sociologists in the history of the field. Durkheim himself is credited with making sociology a science, as he used an empirical methodology in his own studies, especially in regard to his study of suicide rates and issues of European nations.
