Banded kraits in captivity (Bungarus species)
Kraits are elapids, dangerously venomous front fanged snakes that are related to coral snakes, cobras and mambas. They are brightly banded and may look like harmless king snakes or milk snakes. The krait in this picture is a black and yellow banded krait, Bungarus fasciatus. [eng]
Bungarus multicinctus Many banded krait - Chinese Markets
This highly venomous species was not exactly treated with the respect it is due by at least one snake handler. Seen below is a gentleman pulling specimens out of a bag wearing only a small glove and not even coming close to grasping the animals just behind the head. He was more than happy to show his prize to the authors, which considering the recent death of a herpetologist in India from a bite from this species, was less than confidence inspiring. Mortality rate if envenomated is estimated at 50%, even WITH antivenin. [eng]
Bungarus fasciatus - Banded krait - Chinese Markets
Banded kraits and many banded kraits were available in massive quantities as can be seen below. While each of these krait species have a very wide range, the sheer numbers available in the markets must be placing wild populations under some intense pressures. [eng]
