Lichens
Lichens are the paper-like plant that we see littering the forest floor and hanging from trees in late-successional and old-growth forest of the Pacific Northwest. Each side of a lichen is a different color. One side is green and the other varies, but is usually white or black. The lichen itself is a symbiosis of a photosynthetic algae, corresponding to the green side, and a fungus, the white or black side. This is a very unique structure and helps the lichen to serve many purposes. Several species fix atmospheric nitrogen, an element that is necessary for plant development.
