    Lichens
Lichens are the paper-like plant that we see littering the forest floor and hanging from trees in late-successional and old-growth forest of the Pacific Northwest. Each side of a lichen is a different color. One side is green and the other varies, but is usually white or black. The lichen itself is a symbiosis of a photosynthetic algae, corresponding to the green side, and a fungus, the white or black side. This is a very unique structure and helps the lichen to serve many purposes. Several species fix atmospheric nitrogen, an element that is necessary for plant development. When they fall to the ground and decompose, lichens act like fertilizer, making their nitrogen available for uptake by other plants [eng]
