Although the Oscar can attain sizes up to 14 inches or so, it is rare to see one over 12 inches. Astronotus ocellatus
Plusieurs espèces ont été décrites dans le genre, mais on peut les considerer comme synonymes de A. ocellatus. C'est donc une espèce à la coloration variable et la répartition étendue, les différentes populations étant disséminées dans les bassins de l'Amazonie, de la Guyane Française et du nord du Paraguay. Dans leur pays d'origine ils vivent dans des eaux à faible courant et sont pêchés à des fins alimentaires.
