Protomelas spilonotus "Mozambique"
This fish first came into the United States in the mid-seventies as the Sulfur-head Hap. The first time I saw this fish was at the home of Joe Annunziata, one of the co-owners of African Fish Imports in New Jersey. I immediately fell in love with this 8 inch fish and had to have some. [eng]

Protomelas annectens
A beautiful hap from Lake Malawi. First described by Regan in 1922, it is now a quite regular inhabitant of Malawi Haps tanks. Will grow to about 20 cm (the male) while the female will stay a bit smaller. In its natural habitat the fish belongs to the "blue" sand dwellers (like Cyrtocara moorii). [eng]

Protomelas taeniolatus
Reproduction : ce poisson est un incubateur buccal maternel. Il n'y a aucune formation de couple. Le mâle tente d'attirer sur son territoire toute femelle qui s'en approche. La femelle consentante le suit alors pour pondre, puis prendre les oeufs en bouche. Dès le frai terminé, la femelle se retire dans les roches pour terminer l'incubation. Dans de petits aquariums, elle peut-être harcelée sans ménagements et il peut parfois être nécessaire de la retirer. [fra]

Protomelas kirkii
Le protomelas Kirtii ne fait pas partie des stars su Malawi du style Nimbochromis venustus ou placidochromis electra. Son nom n'apparait qu'accosionellement sur les listes des détaillants; pourtant si ses couleurs ne sont pas exeptionelles, elles ne sont pas pour autant dépourvues d'attrait. Assez haut de corps, ce protomelas présente une dominante bleu-turquoise plus accentuée sur la tête. La nageoire anale est jaune avec des ocelles d'un jaune plus foncé. Les nageoirs dorsales et caudales laissent apparaitre des vemiculures rouge-orangé. [fra]

Questo Protomelas sebbene sembri comune in tutto il lago è stato importato raramente; Konings nel libro "Malawi cichlids in their natural habitat" afferma non essere mai stato importato, sono riuscito ad averne una coppia attraverso un importatore tedesco. Non ci sono molte notizie a suo riguardo ma dalle analisi dello stomaco di alcuni esemplari sembra si cibi di alghe e piante, anche se personalmente non ho mai notato una forte predilezione per le piante che ci sono nel mio acquario [ita]

Protomelas
Contraddistinto da due linee orizzontali sempre presenti e occasionalmente da linee verticali, questo genere comprende specie ben note in acquariologia. La prima linea orizzontale più accentuata della seconda, è situata a metà del corpo mentre la seconda si trova nella parte superiore del corpo. Un piccolo appunto va fatto su P.fenestratus e P.taeniolatus spesso confusi tra loro. [ita]

Protomelas taeniolatus "Namalenje"
Ce poisson à la belle robe a été connu des cichlidophiles sous le nom de "Haplochromis boadzulu" jusqu’au jour ou l’on découvrit que le véritable boadzulu était en fait un autre cichlidé classé dans un autre genre, on décida alors de placer notre poisson dans le genre Protomelas décrit en 1989 par Eccles et Trewavas. Les cichlidés classés dans ce genre occupent des biotopes différents (rochers, sable...). [fra]
